Edendork Dance Hall

History

Edendork Dance Hall, originally built as St. Malachy’s Parochial Hall near Dungannon in County Tyrone, opened in 1950 as a community parish hall serving local events and gatherings. By the early 1960s, the building had evolved into a dance hall, hosting popular entertainment and embracing Ireland’s vibrant showband era with weekly dances and concerts. The venue drew crowds from across the region and hosted touring acts including well-known performers from the 1960s and 1970s, becoming one of the most lively social and performance spaces in rural Northern Ireland.

At its peak, Edendork Dance Hall was packed with dancers, featuring live music, a striking dome ceiling, and a large central dance floor characteristics that later made it a sought-after exploration site for urbex photographers and abandoned place hunters.

Through the 1980s and 1990s, changing entertainment tastes and competition from larger venues contributed to a decline in regular activity. The building gradually slipped into disuse, eventually falling into a state of decay. By the early 2000s, it ceased hosting public events and remained unoccupied for decades, attracting urban explorers intrigued by its atmospheric interiors and haunting echo of showband culture.

In the early 2020s, planning permission was granted to demolish the site to make way for a new Edendork Primary School, prompting wider debate among locals and preservationists over its historical significance. Despite campaigns and petitions to save it, the structure was ultimately demolished in October 2024, closing the chapter on one of Northern Ireland’s most memorable abandoned leisure spots.

Today, Edendork Dance Hall lives on only in urbex archives, drone captures, and the memories of those who first danced beneath its roof and later explored its decaying corridors.
