History

Full History & Current Status

Sugar City in Haarlem is a former sugar processing factory that has become one of the Netherlands’ most iconic urbex sites. Constructed in the late 19th century, it served as a central hub for sugar production, processing raw sugar from Dutch colonies and distributing refined sugar across the country. Over the decades, the factory expanded with multiple industrial halls, warehouses, and tall chimneys, embodying the grandeur and scale of Dutch industrial architecture.

By the late 20th century, production declined due to modernization and relocation of operations, leading to the factory’s abandonment. The vast halls, conveyor systems, and storage areas fell into disrepair, creating a perfect urbex playground for explorers, graffiti artists, and photographers drawn to its dramatic industrial decay.

Today, Sugar City is partially preserved as a cultural and event space, with some halls repurposed for creative studios and exhibitions. However, large sections remain untouched, with rusting machinery, peeling paint, and eerie silent corridors, offering a glimpse into the industrial past of Haarlem. The combination of historic significance, massive scale, and urban decay makes it a top destination for urban explorers in the Netherlands.
