Maassilo

Abandoned places in Rotterdam, Netherlands

Standing tall on the Maashaven, the Maassilo in Rotterdam is one of the most iconic urban exploration sites in the Netherlands. Once a colossal grain storage complex serving the city’s bustling harbor, its labyrinth of silos, conveyor belts, and machinery embodies the raw power of 20th-century industry. Today, the site has been partly repurposed into cultural and event spaces, yet many sections still retain their haunting, abandoned atmosphere. For urbex explorers and photographers, it offers the perfect mix of industrial decay and modern reinvention.

History

History & Current Status

The Maassilo was constructed in 1910 as a massive grain silo to serve the Port of Rotterdam, then one of the busiest in the world. Over the decades, it expanded into a sprawling industrial complex with more than 130 grain silos, towering conveyor systems, and advanced machinery for its time. The facility symbolised Rotterdam’s rise as a global trade hub, processing and storing countless tons of imported grain for the European market.
During the mid-20th century, the Maassilo operated at full capacity, representing cutting-edge logistics and industrial power. However, by the 1980s, changing technology and shifting trade routes reduced the site’s importance. By the late 20th century, the once-mighty silos were largely abandoned, leaving behind a decaying industrial giant that became a magnet for urban explorers and photographers seeking to capture its raw, atmospheric beauty.

In the early 2000s, the Maassilo was given a second life. While large parts of the structure remain derelict and filled with urban decay, sections of the complex have been converted into a cultural hotspot, housing clubs, creative studios, and event venues. This unique duality modern nightlife housed within abandoned concrete silos has cemented the Maassilo as both an urbex landmark and a symbol of adaptive reuse.

Today, the Maassilo continues to attract urban explorers, history lovers, and cultural visitors, offering a rare chance to experience Rotterdam’s industrial past in an environment that mixes abandonment, repurposing, and raw architectural power.
