Sanatorium du Basil

Abandoned places in Stoumont, Belgium

Hidden in the woods near Stoumont, the Sanatorium du Basil once welcomed tuberculosis patients in the early 1900s, with healing air, sunlit design, and advanced facilities for its time. Since its abandonment in 2013, this grand, curved sandstone structure complete with a clock tower and sweeping wings has become a legendary urbex site. Popular among urban explorers, its wrecked interiors evoke eerie beauty, even as plans for redevelopment hang in the balance.

History

Full History & Current Status
Origins & Purpose (1900–1903): Commissioned around 1900 by Ernest Malvoz, director of Liège’s bacteriology lab, the Sanatorium du Basil opened in 1903 to treat tuberculosis patients using fresh air and sunlight a modern belief in healing. Architect Émile Remouchamps designed its south-facing curved facade and central clock tower, reflecting both form and function.

Post-TB Uses: As tuberculosis declined, the building served as a psychiatric institution and later, from 2010 to 2013, functioned as an asylum-seeker reception center until soaring maintenance costs forced its closure.
Decay & Urbex Fame: Abandoned since 2013, the sanatorium has become a magnet for urban explorers. Vandalism, graffiti, and structural decay have stripped its interiors down to walls, staircases, and broken towers, drawing both thrill-seekers and photographers.

Future Plans & Redevelopment: The site was sold in 2013 for about €1.5 million, with redevelopment proposals emerging over the years. In 2021, investors planned to convert it into a luxurious hotel with apartments and thermal baths, but financing and planning obstacles stalled the project. The building remains abandoned, with parts slowly being stripped or vandalized.
